The benefits of fitting winter tyres

In a country that rarely sees snow, it should be expected that the drivers of the nation often misunderstand why they should fit their vehicle with winter tyres. Atlas Autos wants to explain the benefits of fitting winter tyres for on your cars this year, let’s discuss...

What are winter tyres?

Winter tyres are designed to offer optimum traction and grip in cold and slippery conditions - they are most effective between November and March, as they will generate much more grip than summer/regular tyres.

They are identifiable by the snowflake symbol situated on the sidewall.

How do winter tyres work?

Winter tyres consist of a softer compound, fitted with narrow cuts and deep grooves built into the tread. These are known as ‘spies’ - they are designed to help disperse both water and snow and to allow the movement of rubber - ultimately improving the tyre contact with the road.

Benefits of installing winter tyres

  • ‘Summer tyres’ stiffen when the temperature drops, making them a lot less safe
  • The tread pattern design and rubber types enable tyres to stay flexible in cold temperatures (giving better braking and handling in cold conditions)
  • They are better at clearing standing water, making them safer than summer tyres when it is raining
  • They provide more traction and grip even on a dry surfaces (as long as the ambient temperature is less than 7 degrees Celsius)
  • Improved road safety and confidence when driving in challenging conditions

Cost of winter tyres

The cost of winter tyres are typically more expensive than regular tyres, but this will ultimately be dependent on your car and wheel size. Four tyres will need to be purchased as having only one pair will compromise the stability of your vehicle.

Whilst the cost of four winter tyres is high, it is an investment. Swapping your tyres to suit the season will enable your summer tyres to last longer.

What is the law around winter tyres?

Winter tyres are not mandatory in the UK, as opposed to the rest of Europe (where they are compulsory between the 1st November and the 15th April). Only a small percentage of UK drivers choose to fit them - individuals mostly living in rural areas.

If you are concerned about the upfront cost of winter tyres, there are high grip alternatives to winter tyres. Snow socks are fabric covers that are fitted over the wheels. Snow chains are hard-wearing (more difficult to fit) steel alternatives.

Although it is not illegal, it is not recommended that you keep your winter tyres on throughout the summer months as the warm weather will wear them out very quickly.
